How It Works
Soft tissue orthopaedics is a structured approach to assessing and caring for the body's soft tissues — the muscles, tendons and ligaments that move and support the joints. Many everyday aches and injuries arise from these tissues rather than the joints themselves, and addressing them directly is often an important part of getting better.
What it is
Soft tissue orthopaedics brings together a range of hands-on techniques for the muscles and connected tissues, applied in a considered, orthopaedic way — meaning the treatment is matched to the specific tissue, the stage of the problem and the way it is behaving. It includes targeted pressure, specific movements, and techniques to address tight, strained or irritated tissue and to restore normal, pain-free function.
How it works
When a muscle, tendon or ligament is overloaded, strained or held in tension, it can become tight, tender and restricted, and it can change how the whole area moves. By assessing exactly which tissues are involved and how, then treating them directly, soft tissue orthopaedics aims to ease that tension, improve the way the tissues glide and move, and support healthy healing. Because the approach is tailored to the tissue and the stage of the problem, an acute strain is handled quite differently from a long-standing area of tightness. This careful matching of technique to tissue is what makes the approach effective rather than simply rubbing where it hurts.
What it is used for
This approach is valuable for a wide range of muscular and soft-tissue problems, including strains, overuse injuries, tendon-related pain and the muscular component of many joint complaints. It is especially relevant to recurrent injuries and sports-related problems, where the soft tissues take much of the load, and it complements our sports therapy care. It is rarely used in isolation, usually sitting alongside joint care and a programme of exercise and rehabilitation.
Who it suits
Anyone whose problem has a significant soft-tissue component may benefit, and the techniques are readily adapted to suit the individual, the tissue and the stage of recovery — from a fresh strain to a long-standing area of tightness. As always, what we use and how depends on a careful assessment of your particular problem.
What to expect
If soft-tissue orthopaedics is part of your care, we will explain what we are treating and why, and keep the work within a comfortable range. Some techniques involve firm, focused pressure on a tight or tender area, which can feel intense for a moment but should never be more than you are happy with. We will always check in with you and adjust as we go.
Our approach at Back in Action
We treat the soft tissues as an integral part of care, not an afterthought, because so many problems involve them. After assessing you, we will explain what we have found and how soft-tissue work fits into your overall plan, which will usually also include attention to the related joints and a tailored exercise programme to restore strength and resilience.
If a muscular or soft-tissue problem is troubling you, we are happy to talk through how hands-on care could help. A thorough assessment always comes first, so the treatment suits your problem. You can get in touch to book an appointment, or see our new patients page for what to expect from your first visit.
