Muscle Energy Techniques

Gentle methods that use your own muscle contractions to ease tightness and improve movement. No thrust and no force, so they suit anyone who prefers an active, low-force approach.

How It Works

Muscle energy techniques, often shortened to MET, are gentle, hands-on methods that use your own muscle contractions to improve movement and ease tightness. Because you take an active part — gently contracting and relaxing muscles on request — they are comfortable, controlled and well suited to people who prefer a low-force approach.

What it is

In a muscle energy technique, the practitioner positions a joint or muscle at a comfortable point near the edge of its range, then asks you to gently push against light resistance for a few seconds before relaxing. This cycle of gentle contraction and relaxation is repeated several times, each time allowing a little more movement. There is no thrust and no force from the practitioner; the "energy" comes from your own muscles, used in a precise and purposeful way, which is why the technique feels so controlled and unthreatening.

How it works

When you contract a muscle and then relax it, the muscle is briefly more willing to lengthen, and the joint it crosses can move a little more freely. By working with this natural response — rather than against it — muscle energy techniques can gently ease tight muscles, improve the range of movement in a stiff joint, and reduce the muscular guarding that often accompanies pain. Because the movements are small, controlled and always within your comfort, the approach is gentle yet surprisingly effective, and it can be repeated safely as often as needed.

What it is used for

MET is useful wherever tight muscles and restricted movement are part of the problem, including neck pain, back pain and many joint complaints. It is often combined with other soft-tissue work and with exercise and rehabilitation, and it can be a good choice where a gentle, active technique is preferable to more forceful methods.

Who it suits

Because it is gentle and involves your active participation, MET suits a wide range of people, including those who feel apprehensive about thrust techniques or who simply prefer a low-force approach. Many people also like that they are doing something themselves rather than having something done to them. As always, whether it is the right choice depends on a careful assessment of your problem.

What to expect

If we use muscle energy techniques with you, we will explain exactly what we would like you to do — usually a gentle push or hold against our hands for a few seconds — and guide you through each step. It is comfortable and undemanding, requires no special effort or fitness, and you stay in control throughout, easing off whenever you need to.

Our approach at Back in Action

Having gentle, active techniques like MET in our toolkit means we can care for tight, restricted areas in a way that suits more people, and involve you directly in your own treatment. After assessing you, we will explain how MET fits into your overall plan, usually alongside other hands-on care and a programme of exercise and rehabilitation to maintain the gains between visits.

If tight muscles and stiff, restricted movement are troubling you, we are happy to talk through whether a gentle, active technique like MET could help. A careful assessment always comes first, so the care suits you. You can get in touch to book an appointment or ask a question before your first visit.
