How It Works
Posture analysis is an assessment of how you hold and move your body — standing, sitting and in motion — and how that affects the load on your joints and muscles. Because so many everyday aches are bound up with sustained posture, understanding yours is often an important step towards both relief and prevention.
What it is
Posture analysis involves observing how you stand and sit, how your spine and limbs are aligned, and how you move through everyday positions. It is not about chasing some idealised "perfect posture" — there is no single correct way to hold the body, and research has moved away from the idea that one exists — but about spotting patterns of sustained loading or restricted movement that may be contributing to your symptoms. The best posture, broadly, is the one you change often.
How it works
The body copes remarkably well with movement and variety, but it tolerates sustained, static positions far less happily. Prolonged sitting, a habitually forward head position, or repeatedly loading one side can leave particular muscles tired and tight and particular joints stiff. By analysing your posture and habits, we can identify these patterns and understand how they relate to the problem you have come in with, which often makes sense of pain that has otherwise seemed puzzling.
What it helps with
Posture-related loading is a common thread running through many complaints we see, including neck pain, upper back pain and tension headaches. Understanding your posture helps us tailor both hands-on care and, just as importantly, the practical advice and exercises that address the underlying habits — because lasting improvement usually comes from changing what loads the area, not just treating the symptom.
What to expect
A posture assessment is straightforward and nothing to feel self-conscious about. We will simply observe how you stand, sit and move, and may ask about your work, your daily routine, your sleep set-up and the positions you spend most time in. From this we build a practical picture of how your body is being loaded day to day.
How it fits into care
What we learn from posture analysis feeds directly into the rest of your plan. It guides the advice we give on your workstation and daily habits — closely linked to ergonomics — and shapes the tailored programme of exercise and rehabilitation we build to strengthen the areas that need support. Alongside hands-on care, this is often what turns a recurring problem into a resolved one.
Our approach at Back in Action
We see posture not as something to be judged, but as useful information about how your body is being loaded. By understanding it, we can give you advice and exercises that fit your actual life and habits, and help you take an active role in your own recovery and in preventing problems returning. The goal is not to hold yourself rigidly "correctly", but to move more, vary your positions, and build the strength to support whatever your day asks of you.
If you suspect posture and daily habits are feeding a recurring ache, a posture-aware assessment can help make sense of it and point to practical changes. We are happy to talk it through — you can get in touch to book an appointment, or see our new patients page for what to expect from your first visit.
