Neuro-Emotional Technique (NET)

A gentle mind-body approach to the physical tension that stress can produce. It works on the body, not the mind: it is not psychological therapy or a treatment for any mental-health condition.

How It Works

The Neuro-Emotional Technique, or NET, is a mind-body approach that some of our practitioners are trained in. It is based on the idea that stress and tension can show up in the body in physical ways. We offer it carefully and within clear limits, and we are explicit that it is not psychological therapy and not a treatment for any mental-health condition.

What it is

NET is an approach that considers the connection between everyday stress and physical tension — the familiar way that pressure can leave us tight-shouldered, clench-jawed or knotted up. It uses a gentle, structured process, including light muscle testing and gentle physical contacts, with the aim of helping the body let go of some of the physical tension associated with stress. Most people recognise the basic idea that stress can be carried in the body. It is offered as one supportive, optional element of care, not as a primary treatment.

Being clear about what it is not

This matters more than anything else on this page. NET is not counselling, psychotherapy or any form of mental-health treatment, and it is not a substitute for them. We make no claims that it treats anxiety, depression, trauma or any psychological or medical condition, and the scientific evidence base in this area is limited. If you are struggling with your mental health, stress or your emotional wellbeing, the right support comes from your GP and appropriate mental-health professionals, and we would always encourage you to seek it. We see NET, where it is used at all, as a gentle adjunct concerned with physical tension, working alongside — never instead of — proper care.

What it is used for

Within this careful scope, NET may be offered as one supportive part of care for the physical tension that stress can produce, complementing our wider help for stress-related musculoskeletal pain. It is always one small, optional element of a broader, physically focused plan.

Who it suits

NET may suit people who are interested in a gentle mind-body approach as a supportive extra and who clearly understand its limits. It is entirely optional and never essential to your care; if it is not for you, that is completely fine, and there are always other ways to address physical tension. As always, we assess first and explain things honestly so you can make an informed choice.

What to expect

If NET is used, it involves a gentle, structured process with light physical contacts and muscle testing; there is nothing forceful or uncomfortable about it. We will explain what it involves and its limits clearly beforehand, and we proceed only if you are entirely comfortable and happy to.

Our approach at Back in Action

We offer NET honestly, modestly and within firm limits, as one optional adjunct concerned with physical tension rather than a treatment for emotional or psychological conditions. Our focus remains firmly musculoskeletal, and we will always encourage you towards appropriate medical or mental-health support where that is what is genuinely needed.

If the physical tension that stress can cause is troubling you, we are happy to talk through how we may be able to help with the musculoskeletal side. If you are struggling with your mental health or emotional wellbeing, please also speak to your GP, who can guide you to the right support. You can get in touch with any questions.
